Spring wedding menus with a twist

Spring weddings are ever popular and it’s no wonder. It’s a beautiful time of year for a wedding ceremony with the weather getting warmer, blossom on trees and daffodils, tulips and other spring flowers making their appearance. Weather-wise, it can be a bit unpredictable, but if you’re getting married in the UK, that’s something you have to deal with at any time of year.

Food-wise, though, it’s a delight, with lots of wonderful, seasonal produce that gets everyone’s mouths watering. That said, while it can be tempting to run with tradition, why not add a bit of a twist to your wedding menu, serving old favourites in less predictable ways.

Below are some tips we've picked up about wedding menus for Spring weddings.

Starter

Soup is a traditional British starter at any time of year, and tomato and basil is always a popular choice as it satisfies both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, and doesn’t fill anyone up too much before the mains are served. But if you’re looking for a twist on this, why not take the basic ingredients – tomato and basil – and serve as a salad instead. Juicy tomato, meaty basil and a drizzle of olive oil and you have a refreshing starter that will have your guests anticipating their main course.

Meat

Nothing says spring like roast lamb, does it? But before you go arranging for a roast dinner, have a think about other ways to serve. The great thing about lamb is you can do it differently without having to stray too far from tradition. For instance, why not serve lamb kleftiko, with each guest getting their own little parcel of melt-in-the-mouth lamb served with Greek-style roast potatoes and seasonal veg. It’s still a delicious spring meal, but just that little bit different to your standard roast.

Vegetarian

Vegetarian options in spring are a delight. You can either search for seasonal produce or look for menu ideas from warmer climes. You could, for example, look to the Middle Eastern cuisine for inspiration, with baked aubergine crusted with herbs and served with couscous and chickpeas as well as a selection of vegetables. Or you could look to Southern Europe and serve a classic dish such as gnocchi with chargrilled veg.

Dessert

For spring, you want to keep dessert options light and refreshing but instead of ice cream, perhaps choose a zingy fruit sorbet instead. Or instead of a tarte au citron, choose the vintage classic that is lemon meringue pie. You’re giving the flavours people expect, but perhaps in a form that they don’t.
